Can anyone give me a guide on Alligator gar fishing?

Behind my house i have this bayou/creek like thing and i know there is alligator gar in it since me and my friend where attacked(kinda but not rly) by one when it jumped into our boat and cut us up pretty bad. ive been fishing for ahwile and i really want to catch oone of them. and bow fishing is out of the picture since its kinda deep and rly wide. ive heard of the frayed nylon rope method, but as ive never gar fished i was wondering if anyone had a good, Detailed guide (and dont give me the wikihow guide ive already looked at it). And as extra info i have a 8-9 foot rod thats pretty sturdy.
